A Taste of D313 Truth

A Taste of D313 Truth

September 30th will mark four years since Detroit313 officially went live to the world. But if I’m being completely honest with you, this journey didn't start in 2022.

The childhood desire to design was reignited back in 2011 by my eldest child. By 2016, the mental blueprint for D313 was fully formed, and by 2019, the foundation was officially set. The journey to get there, however, was far from set or easy.

Before I even knew what print-on-demand was, I was out here researching agencies, pricing production houses, and trying to figure out how to get the designs in my head brought to life. The “traditional” route was out of reach financially, and seeing how so many new “brands” were popping up so easily sparked my curiosity, prompting me to do even deeper research.

Not one to jump on bandwagons, I reluctantly tried Print on Demand anyway after seeing how much doing everything on my own in-house would cost at the time. Yes, it was cheaper than a full production house, but still more than I felt equipped to invest right then. It’s amazing how changing your mindset and perspective can propel you into new ways of moving, but we’ll save that revelation for another day.

My goal was never just to "sell t-shirts" or chase quick popularity. I wanted to build a real fashion brand, using elevated athleisure and luxury essentials as the stepping stone toward a full daily-wear line.

When I first launched on social media in 2022 taking that print-on-demand route to avoid massive upfront costs, I got a handful of orders from people I knew. Shortly after, I completely stopped promoting the store.

Why? Because the samples coming back to me were horrible. The white ink looked grey, the garment color bled through the prints, and the only one that offered real personal branding was the worst. I realized very quickly, if a fulfillment company is willing to ship subpar quality to the brand owner, they definitely don't care about what my customers receive. I refused to build my name on that.

Frustrated and at a wall, I went on a spiritual fast for clarity & direction. Literally the next day, the right search query hit me, and I was led directly to our current production vendor, a supplier using GOTS® and Supima® cottons that align with my core values, the exact same caliber used by major luxury houses.

D313 is built on intention, transparency, and a 10-year vision that is still unfolding.

As we mark our 4th official year sharing this movement with you, thank you for supporting the journey, understanding the message, and wearing the culture with pride.

We are officially 7 days away from revealing our special 4th Anniversary design.

Thank you for walking in victory with us.

With love and intention,
